Netflix is testing the waters with promotional videos inserted in between episodes and movies, and users are up-in-arms.
The videos, which promote other pieces of Netflix original content, are inserted after a user finishes watching an episode or movie.
The service began quietly testing this new behavior last week, and it didn’t take users long to notice. Subscribers began voicing their concerns on social media – some claimed they could skip the ads, while others said they couldn’t. According to Netflix, all of their “recommendations” should be skippable from the very beginning.
“We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster,” Netflix said in a statement. “It is important to note that a member is able to skip a video preview at anytime if they are not interested.”
The company also explained that it conducts “hundreds of tests” each year, and the vast majority of them are never adopted.
