Facebook has been talking for sometime now on making changes to the size of its pages and profiles since October of last year. Many may have assumed that is was a rumor and dismissed the topic all together. However, Facebook has finally decided to make the changes this month, August 23rd to be exact.

This might not sound like a big deal to profile owners, but for developers and page owners this could be a catastrophe. Since many have put a lot of hard work and coding into making Facebook Pages more unique with Static FBML and applications.
Facebook announced today that they will be changing profile and page sizes to 520 pixel width and will allow page owners to preview what the page will look like and give you time to make the changes. The useless “boxes” tab on both profile and pages will be disappearing as well from tabs and application settings.
Facebook is making these changes due to feedback from developers and want to make a smooth transition saying:
“These updates are designed to simplify navigation for users, reduce complexity for developers, and enable us to build the next generation of tools for growing your business with Facebook. We’ll share more of our plans for the roadmap in the coming weeks.”
This could be a good change for businesses in the near future, but for now you will have to manually make changes to those specialized tabs to fit the format or it will make your pages look horrible come August 23rd, when the resize will happen with or without your changes.
I can hear page owners and developers scrambling now…

Meh is my general feeling here. We run a few small facebook pages and I welcome any efforts to simplify and standardize things on pages but this news just makes me glad we never got into heavy customization of facebook pages.
Hi Adam
It is actually a good thing that you didn’t customize because this is going to hurt a lot of businesses who own pages or page owners in general. This is also going to hurt developers and those who use applications on pages. It is great that Facebook is giving a heads up but in such a short time. Thanks Adam for your thoughts!

Yeah, I talked about this on my show last night. I heard about changing the width late last year so when I created my Facebook page, made sure to keep under that just in case and well, looks like it’s going to be happening!
That was uber smart Mike!
