What You Didn't Know About Super Mario Bros.

If you’re under the age of 40 you’ve most likely navigated the magical world of Super Mario Bros. From Mario 64 to the most recent Super Mario Galaxy 2, a certain little red plumber will always hold a special place in our hearts. But did you know Mario was originally called “Jumpman” or they’re currently a group of individuals participating in a Mario Marathon, kicking some serious koopa butt through every Mario game in existence. All to raise money for the Child’s Play Charity (as of the publishing of this article they’ve raised over $65,000).

So while you may or may not be eye-balling the Mario Marathon guys over their U-Stream channel, or kicking some Bowser tail on your own why not take a break to catch up on your Super Mario Bros trivia.

1. The First Incarnation of Mario Bros. was produced by Nintendo in 1983.

2. The game is a spin-off of the arcade classic Donkey Kong.

3. Mario was originally call Jumpman. the name was later changed after game Developer Shigeru Miyamoto’s landlord, Mario Segale burst into his apartment demanding rent.

4. Mario was given a hat so the developers didn’t have to create realistic hair movement.

5. The developers gave Mario a mustache to make his nose more noticeable.

6. Mario was given overalls to make his arm movements more noticeable.

7. Originally a carpenter, Mario’s occupation was changed to a plumber because of his appearance and the series of pipes that made up the Mario Bros. landscape.

8. Mario’s first damsel in distress Pauline, named after Polly James, wife of Nintendo of America employee Don James.

9. Luigi was just something provided by the American Nintendo team as something that would go well with Mario.

10. The name Koopa is taken from “Kuppa”, the Japanese name for Bowser.

11. The name Wario is a combination of Mario and warui, Japanese for “bad”.

12. Super Mario Bros. was the best selling video game of all time for over two decades with worldwide sales of 40.241 million copies. It would be surpassed by Wii Sports in 2009.
