For a while now YouTube has allowed videos owners to upload caption files to their YouTube videos but today YouTube is announcing automatic transcriptions (similar to those used in Google Voice) for ALL videos. Google has acknowledged that the transcriptions are far from perfect, and often more humorous then useful, but its a great start.
In order to enable this on your account you can visit (later today) the captions button from my videos and enable the Machine Transcription option to be turned on for your account as shown in the image below.
According to Google, This is “not the first time anyone’s tried to apply speech dictation technology to videos. But on the scale side, 20 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. Even a small percentage of that, represents one of the largest deployments of this technology we’ve seen today. This kind of technology has been developed over the past 50 years, but it’s been improving incrementally, year-over-year. And at our scale, and with this accuracy, we think it’s a useful thing to do. You’ll also see continued improvement as the technology gets better. “
